bounded Component Share
Whether a fitted mixture shows the signature of having been over-fitted.
A partition into many groups makes each component a local fit to a narrow slice, and the natural local fit to a narrow slice is often a bounded family. Several adjacent bounded components are a piecewise-constant density — a histogram — so a fit that is mostly bounded may be tracking the sample rather than describing the process.
Measured across the designed experiment, fits that over-selected the component count were far more bounded than those that did not: on a truth of pure normals, 91% of the components of over-selecting fits were bounded against 35% otherwise.
This is a warning, not a verdict. Data that genuinely is bounded should of course be fitted with bounded families, and then a high share means nothing is wrong. It is informative only when there is no reason for the data to be bounded.
