Null means "no distribution is defined for this TYPE". It does not cover a known type carrying invalid parameter values: the distribution's own constructor rejects those, so this function throws IllegalArgumentException rather than returning null. An estimator reporting success does not guarantee parameters a distribution will accept — a normal with zero variance, estimated from constant data, is the reachable case — so a caller scoring several candidates should expect both outcomes.
